THE
WALKING
BETWEEN WORLDS
COLLECTION
A calm & joyful Presence…
Walking is my favourite way to get to know new and familiar places. Each of these paintings captures a sight that I’ve passed by one, or many times, on a walk.
This collection features scenes in late afternoon, magic hour, dusk, and nighttime light. These liminal times have an other-worldly quality to them. During these moments, the eye and mind become slightly uncertain. Information gets lost in the shadows. Light and colour shift … and the earth and spirit worlds seem to almost merge.
I love to create a sense of place in my work that draws you into another world – one that is just slightly adjacent to this one.
When working in the studio, I take myself back to the feeling of a time or place and do everything I can to hold onto that as I paint. This creates a rich mood that is both evocative and true – not always in the sense of literal accuracy, but in that the painting captures a truth of experience that I hope comes through to you, when you see it.
It’s the best way I know to say,
“look, this is what I saw… can you feel it, too?”
“In late afternoon, the sun, low in the sky, illuminates houses & trees with a warm orange glow and casts long shadows. Light bounces around in the shadow areas with a folly of colours…”
Hand-crafted from start to finish…
Each piece begins with a simple black & white sketch in pencil. The composition is designed on paper with notes added to the margins. Once the idea is clear, the scene is drawn on textured watercolour paper. A warm undertone is added before beginning to build up deliciously rich painted colour. Brushes & movement create marks that add to the experience.
Next, cradled wood panels are sanded smooth and sealed in preparation for the artwork. Once the painting has been mounted on panel, a concealed wire is added for hanging, the sides sealed, and the top carefully varnished an an ultra-mat varnish. The overall effect is of beautifully crafted simplicity. Sure to bring joy for a lifetime!
“As dusk arrives, the light becomes blue-tinted & hazy, whole areas becoming lost to shadow. Bare trees reach up towards a darkening sky…”
“Walking, alone with your thoughts, observing light, weather, and the world around you, can be a meditative practice. Your feet ground you to the earth, your attention keeps you present, and your surroundings bring joy & new ideas.”
